BEST INSTANT CAMERA – TOP 10 REVIEW
Updated 13 January, 2018
This article was updated to include some of the recent instant cameras launched by Fuji, in particular the Instax Mini 9 and the Instax Square SQ10 both of which are excellent cameras in their own right and deserving of a place in the Top 10 best instant camera 2018 review.
We have also included 2 bonus best instant camera reviews at the end of this article to spread the instant photography love even further – please enjoy the article.
1 Best Instant Camera – Instax Mini 9 (Editor’s Choice)
The Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 was released in March 2017 and designed as a replacement for the immensely popular Instax Mini 8. This camera has been selected as the “Editor’s Choice” because it has all the benefits of the Mini 8 plus some new additions which we really like:
- The addition of a selfie mirror is a useful upgrade from the Mini 8
- The mini 9 comes in 5 awesome colours
- It includes a close-up lens attachment for shooting objects 35-50 cm away
If you are a current Mini 8 owner then we would not recommend upgrading to the Instax Mini 9 – because in our view the upgrades are not sufficient to justify owning two cameras which are ultimately quite similar in terms of performance – unless you are a Fuji instant camera or selfie fanatic lol.
That being said if you are in the market looking for a new instant camera then we would highly recommend the Instax Mini 9!
2 Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 Camera
The Fuji Instax Mini 8 is by far the highest selling best instant camera 2018, with over 8,000 reviews rating the camera 4.6 stars. It’s extremely easy to use, small enough to fit in your bag and, at the time of writing, is selling at a bargain price of $55.00.
One of the camera’s key features is the automatic setting selection to help you shoot pictures with the correct brightness level. There are four different exposure levels:
- Indoors, Night (F12.7)
- Cloudy, Shade (F16)
- Sunny, Slightly cloudy (F22)
- Sunny and bright (F32)
The camera will inform you of the best setting and all you have to do is turn the dial to the illuminated setting which makes this camera perfect for kids and adults alike.
Note: at the time of writing we understand that Fujifilm has discontinued production of the Instax Mini 8, therefore if you are looking to purchase a new instant camera we recommend choosing the Instax Mini 9 instead
3 Instax Square SQ10
The Instax Square SQ10 was released by Fujifilm in May, 2017. It is revolutionary for the instant camera world because it is a “hybrid instant camera” which combines the advantages of an instant camera with some really neat digital technology and features including:
- 10 instagram-like filters
- The ability to edit, trim and select photos for printing (saving you money, as we all know the cost of printing on instant film can be expensive!)
- Dual system shutter buttons (great for lefties)
- Vignette control which allows you to adjust the peripheral light between 19 levels
- Automatic exposure control
- An LCD monitor on the back of the camera
The SQ10 is also a first in that it prints on Square Film with a 62mm x 62 mm print size. We will be updating this post regularly with Amazon customer reviews so be sure to bookmark this page and visit regularly for the latest updates!

4 Impossible Polaroid 600 Round Camera
When Polaroid announced it would stop producing their best instant cameras, the Impossible project was founded and purchased the last remaining factory closed down days before it was due to close down. Since 2008, it has been refurbishing Polaroid cameras, including the highly-rated 600 type.
The Impossible Polaroid 600 Round Camera is a nineties style camera which shares the same features and functions as the original square-bodied Polaroid 600 cameras of the eighties. Each camera has been carefully refurbished and fitted with a new Impossible frog tongue to shield photos as they print from the camera. It comes with a one-year warranty and uses Impossible 600 instant film.
It’s an ideal best instant camera choice for beginners to instant photography, with an easy to use point and shoot style, a built-in automatic flash and fixed-focus lens for capturing photos indoors and outdoors. It also comes with easy to use controls for adjusting exposure levels, enabling you to readily get a brighter or darker image.
5 Fujifilm Instax Mini 70
The Fujifilm Instax Mini 70 is the newest addition to their instant camera range. It’s stylish design makes it a natural step-up model to the hugely popular Instax Mini 8.
Perhaps one of the nicest features of the Mini 70 is the ‘Selfie’ mode which is ideal if you love taking selfies. Users can press the selfie button when shooting, so that the camera automatically adjusts the brightness and focal length so they are optimized for selfie shots. One other neat feature is the the selfie mirror beside the lens which lets you check the framing to achieve the best angle for your selife.
We also really liked the ‘self-timer’ mode which allows you to take group shots without leaving anybody out, this feature is something that not many of the best instant cameras have and is a real plus.
The camera has a lot of other great features including automatic exposure control and the new ‘Fill-in-Flash’ which you can read about here.
6 Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic Instant Film Camera
The Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic is arguably the best instant camera for style in the Instax range with it’s retro-inspired design. It also comes with a wider range of settings and features which make this an excellent choice if you are looking for an instant camera that offers a higher degree of control over your photos.
Overall the range of settings and features are pretty straightforward to use and the learning curve is minimal. The Instax mini 90 is great fun to shoot with and captures natural, great-looking photos.
The Instax Mini 90 is perfect if you are looking for a stylish instant camera that allows you to get more experimental with your photos.
7 Fujifilm Instax Wide 300 Instant Film Camera
The Fuji Instax Wide 300 instant cameras superpower is that it takes photos which are twice the size of the Instax Mini Cameras.
As with most Instax cameras the Instax Wide 300 is a simple, easy to use camera that is lots of fun and perfect for capturing special moments at parties or with loved ones. The camera has some noteworthy features to help you capture the perfect shot, all of which are controlled by a few simple buttons.
This camera uses Fuji Instant Wide Film.
8 Fujifilm Instax Hello Kitty Camera
Everyone’s favourite charater is now a camera! And who better to introduce you this camera than Hello Kitty:
This Instax is a great present for anyone is a fan of Hello Kitty and makes a perfect present set as the box comes complete with a Hello Kitty strap, zoom lens and 10 sheets of Hello Kitty film.
One super cute accessory for this camera that we really like is the Katia Camera Case Bag which is also handy for storing your photos in and helps protect the camera.
9 Fujifilm Instax Mini 25
The Instax Mini 25 is a midrange instant camera with a motorized 3 position collapsible lens which allows you to find objects far away easily. You should know that even with the collapsible lens, you cannot zoom in on targets.
The Mini 25 features a selfie portrait mirror, high quality Fujinon lens and close-up lens which allows you to you shoot up to 35cm to create enlarged subjects. The camera is very simple to operate and features auto built-in intelligent flash which allows you to point and shoot, although one drawback of this is the flash can’t be switched off.
Bottom line – if you are looking for a stylish instant camera whith better quality and some options then this may be a good option for you.
CONCLUSION – Which is the Best Instant Camera 2018?
We have to admit that it’s not easy to pick the best instant camera 2018 as each of the cameras reviewed here is an excellent performer. That said, there are a few standouts for us and we have selected a “Best Instant Camera 2018” based on the following 4 award categories:
Best Instant Camera for Value: Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 Instant Camera
The Fuji Instax Mini 9 is a tremendous instant camera, and it comes as no surprise that it was selected as the “Editor’s Choice” for best instant camera for value.
At the time of writing, the Instax Mini 9 is selling on amazon for a little under $65 USD which we feel is a bargain in terms of the value and fun you will get from using this camera at weddings, parties and to capture other special occasions or moments in your life.
It is also worth noting that the Instax Mini 9 will replace the best-selling Instax Mini 8 – which we understand has now been discontinued by Fujifilm – although some shops will continue to sell off old stock for a while longer.
Best Instant Camera for Style: Fujifilm Instax Mini Neo 90 Classic Instant Camera
The Mini 90 carries one of the higher price tags, but in terms of style it’s retro-inspired design and range of manual settings makes it a clear winner in the “most stylish” category.
Best Instant Camera for Die-Hard Instant Camera Fans: Impossible Polaroid 600 Camera
The history and story behind the Impossible project will really capture the heart and imagination of anyone who is fond of the history of instant cameras and for that reason we felt it was a standout for die-hard instant camera enthusiasts.
Best Instant Hybrid Camera: Fuji Instax Square SQ10
The SQ10 is a trendsetter and is the latest addition to the Fujifilm Instax range. It is a “hipster meets instagram” camera that is lots of fun to shoot with.
Bonus Best Instant Camera Reviews
We have provided a review of the 10 Best Instant Cameras 2018, in case that wasn’t enough we have provided two extra bonus reviews from the Polaroid instant camera range as we felt these cameras were also deserving of a mention in this review.
Polaroid Snap Instant Digital Camera
The Polaroid Snap is a modern take on the instant camera and comes in a stylish, compact package. As per the other instant cameras in this review, you simply point and click to print vibrant, quality instant photos. The camera also has a timer which is perfect for selfies.
Where the Polaroid Snap differs from other instant cameras is it’s ability to continue snapping photos whilst it continues to print your previous shot. It also prints onto zink paper, which develops instantly and is significantly cheaper than Instax film.
You can print in full colour, black and white sepia. It takes up to a 32gb SD card meaning you have the advantages of an instant camera while being able to save your photos to upload onto social media.
Polaroid PIC-300 Instant Film Camera
The Polaroid PIC-300 is actually a re-branded Fujifilm Instax Mini 7S. It’s extremely easy to use with a simple four scene settings to help capture the perfect shot in any light. It also has an auto flash which activates in low light environments.
A good camera by all accounts, however for our money we can’t help feeling that the Fuji Instax Mini 8 is a better buy.
Thanks for taking the time to visit our site and we really hope you found this Best Instant Camera 2018 review useful and that you are now a step closer to buying your first instant camera or in looking to upgrade your existing one.
